In Norse mythology, Hel is the ruler of the underworld that bears her name. She is the daughter of the trickster god Loki and the giantess Angroboda, as well as the sister of the fearsome Fenrir and Jormungand. When the beloved Norse god Baldur died, the gods sent Hermod to Hel's domain in a bid to retrieve him. Hel, however, set a condition - she would only agree to release Baldur if every being in the universe wept for him. Though all the living creatures cried for Baldur, a giantess, likely Loki in disguise, refused, and Hel kept Baldur in her realm.
